Greetings Fellow Debaters,

Please find attached the invitation to Loomis Chaffee’s 34th Annual Debate Tournament to be held on January 17, 2016 (switch-side, cross-ex, policy resolution with a one-hour preparation period using a supplied packet of information). Details about the day and the style of debate are included in the invitation. Those who have been coming to our tournament in the past will notice that we have made several modifications to the tournament while still preserving the style of debate. You should, therefore, read very carefully the invitation which outlines the format of this tournament.

Briefly, our tournament will be, as in the past, a cross-ex, switch side, policy debate, but this year, none of the participants will know the resolution prior to the day of the tournament. We have arranged for long-time debate advocate, Everett Rutan, the Executive Director of the Connecticut Debate Association (who has long-standing affiliations with the Yale Debate Society), to choose a resolution and to provide a 10 to 12 page research packet (given to each debater) to accompany that resolution. Debaters will have one hour to work together in teams (schools) to prepare their cases using the packet (but no other research materials of any kind) before the rounds of debate begin. Thus, teams have access to exactly the same information, so the debates will be assessing how well you can work with that information to produce & defend cogent, persuasive arguments on both sides of the issue. After the one hour preparation period, the debate competition will begin with each team debating both sides of the resolution. The first two rounds will be assigned (one round on each side) – on the third round the side will be decided in the room by coin flip.

We hope you share our enthusiasm for our trial with this format. We believe it will preserve some of the best features of our tournament while eliminating the sometimes onerous research burden that was a challenge for some in in mid-January. Full details on the day, as well as guidelines for judges, are included in the attached invitation.

Teams may enter up to two 4-person teams in each division (Advanced & Novice) and must supply a judge for each 4-person team entered. We ask that you reserve your spots in the tournament by January 8 (earlier if possible) and that you supply the names of your debaters by January 14. The cost for entering is $70 per four-person team – no additional charge for observers

Each school may register up to four four-person teams, no more than two in either division (advanced and novice). Space will be given on a first-come, first-served basis, due to limited classroom space. We will send out an email when the tournament is filled.

The cost will be $75 per four-person team and $10 per observer. We ask that schools bring a judge for each four-person team entered. Unfortunately, we cannot provide judges. In accordance with DANEIS league rules, student judges will not be permitted to judge advanced debates. Parents of students debating in the advanced division should judge in novice. There will be three rounds of debate. Resolutions will be straight; no redefinition will be necessary. Debaters will then have ten minutes to construct cases. The format will follow the rules available on the DANEIS website (http://daneis.org/wordpress/?page_id=31). We will provide awards for the best three individual debaters in each category, the best three two-person teams in each category, and the best three schools.

Dear Fellow DANEIS Coaches,

On behalf of the Phillips Academy Philomathean Society, we are writing to invite you to participate in the Andover Invitational Debate Tournament, to be held on Sunday, November 1st, 2015. The tournament will consist of three rounds of Parliamentary debate (straight resolutions) for both novice and advanced divisions. Points of Information will be permitted and encouraged. Points of Order, Points of Personal Privilege, and heckling will not be permitted.

Awards will be given to the top three novice and advanced speakers, (the top speaker from each school will also be acknowledged), the top three novice and advanced two-person teams and the top three schools. The top speaker in the Advanced Division at this tournament qualifies to attend the World Debate Tournament next spring.

The day will begin with registration in the Lobby of George Washington Hall from 9:00 a.m.– 10:00 a.m. Breakfast will be provided in Paresky Commons beginning at 9:00. Briefings for Debaters and Judges will begin promptly at 10:15 and round one will begin at 11:00. After the conclusion of the third round of debate, at approximately 2:15, a full lunch will be provided for the debaters and judges in Paresky Commons. We anticipate that the brief awards ceremony will conclude by 3:30.

New resolutions will be provided for each of the three rounds. While no redefinition will be necessary, there will be a 2-minute definition-of-terms period during which all debaters must stay in the room with the judge and agree to terms before the 10-minute preparation time begins. During the 10-minute preparation period, the government should proceed to the hallway to prepare separately. As with all DANEIS tournaments, it is strictly understood that teams may not consult any reference materials (electronic or otherwise) during their preparation time or during the actual debate. Teams that violate these rules will be disqualified from the tournament.

The format will be as follows:

Prime Minister – 5 minute constructive
Member of the Opposition – 8 minute speech
Minister of the Crown – 8 minute speech
Leader of the Opposition – 8 minute speech including rebuttal
Prime Minister – 3 minute rebuttal

Each school may register up to two four-person teams in each division, and must also provide one judge for each four-person team. In accordance with DANEIS league rules, student judges will not be permitted to judge advanced debates, and students judging in the novice division must be experienced debaters who have competed in DANEIS tournaments at the advanced level. Parents of students debating in the tournament should judge only in the division in which their student is not participating. In order to save tournament time, the briefing for debaters and judges will be limited to answering questions and explaining logistics. All schools are expected to have briefed their judges thoroughly on the rules, format, and the scoring techniques of parliamentary debating before arriving at the tournament. Judging materials and directions will be sent to confirmed schools the week before the event.

Please email Alexander Djamoos as soon as possible indicating the number of teams that you would like to register in each division. Fees for the debate are $75 for each four-person team and $15 per observer, and are payable at registration. Registration preference will be given to schools that host DANEIS tournaments. Once registrations from host schools are processed, available spots will be filled in order of request. This tournament fills every year. Please be considerate and only reserve spaces for teams that you are highly confident that you will be able to bring. We will confirm your preliminary reservation no later than October 18th. Names of your debaters and judges are due no later than October 25th. Final registrations will be confirmed once these are received.

We very much look forward to welcoming you and your debaters in a little less than one month.

Fellow Debaters:

The St. Paul’s School Debate Team cordially invites you to attend our Sixth Annual Invitational Debate Tournament in Honor of Secretary of State John F. Kerry, to be held on Sunday, October 18, 2015.

The tournament is open to both advanced and novice teams, and you are welcome to enter no more than two four-person teams in each division. You must also provide one judge for each four-person team. In accordance with the DANEIS rule, only those who have participated in no more than six previous interscholastic tournaments, or those who have not debated in the last fifteen calendar months, may compete as novices. We do ask that coaches use their discretion.

The tournament will be Oregon-style Prepared, and will consist of three rounds. Pairs will debate on the same side of the resolution for all three rounds. The resolution is:

BIRT: the U.S. government should implement a tax on wealth.

Again, each team shall consist of four students, accompanied by a judge. While experienced advanced debaters are acceptable as judges in the novice division, advanced teams must have an adult judge. We regret that we are unable to provide judges. ALL student and adult judges should be thoroughly prepared in order to ensure a fair and constructive tournament.

Registration fees are $70 per four-person team (including judge), with a $10 charge per observer to offset meal costs. Please let us know by October 9 how many advanced teams, novice teams and observers you plan to bring, by emailing Kevin Barry, kbarry@sps.edu. Once we hear from you and closer to the tournament date, we will send you a request for the names of participating students to enter into our scoring system.

If there are any changes in the number of teams, names of participants, or positions they are debating (affirmative or negative), please contact me as soon as possible prior to the tournament. If the changes are last minute, on the morning of the debate, it is imperative that you call my cell phone (609-571-2206) before you leave your school, so that the schedule of debates, and/or the appropriate information in our scoring database, can be adjusted in time for a smooth start.

Please refer to our directions below to St. Paul’s as GPS systems can often send drivers in the wrong direction! Silk Farm Road is CLOSED to traffic.

We hope that you can join us, and look forward to greeting you on October 18.

DANEIS Parliamentary Debate documents – 2015-16

Dear Fellow Debaters,

The Roxbury Latin School Debate Society cordially invites you to participate in our Parliamentary Debate Tournament on Sunday, September 20, 2015. There will be both Novice and Advanced divisions. With all DANEIS parliamentary debates now using extemporaneous straight resolutions and allowing only Points of Information (no Points of Order, no Points of Personal Privilege, no heckling), we hope that you will be able to join us for this league opener. At the last coaches meeting, it was suggested that we compile all documents related to DANEIS Parliamentary Debate into one file. The dream has been realized! Attached is a file that contains the complete package of DANEIS Parliamentary materials for prepping judges and debaters, updated with the suggestions made to last year’s proposed documents. It takes time to read through these materials, so please be sure to give new judges this material well in advance. As always, there will be new resolutions for each of the three rounds. While no redefinition will be necessary, there will be a two minute definition-of-terms period, where all debaters must stay in the room with the judge and speaker to agree to terms before the 10-minute preparation time begins. During the 10-minute preparation period, the Government should repair to the hallway to prepare separately from the Opposition. As with all DANEIS tournaments, it is strictly understood that teams may not consult any reference materials of any kind (electronic or otherwise) during their preparation time or during the actual debate. Teams that violate these rules will be disqualified from the tournament. The format will be as follows:

Prime Minister – 5 minute constructive
Member of the Opposition – 8 minute speech
Minister of the Crown – 8 minute speech
Leader of the Opposition – 8 minute speech
Prime Minister – 3 minute rebuttal

Each school may enter no more than one four-person team in each division, and must also provide one judge for each four-person team. In accordance with DANEIS league rules, student judges will not be permitted to judge advanced debates, and students judging in the novice division must be experienced debaters who have competed in DANEIS tournaments at the advanced level. Parents of students debating in the advanced division should judge ONLY in the NOVICE division.

All schools are expected to brief their judges thoroughly on the rules, format, and the scoring techniques of debating. For those new to parliamentary debating and points of information, here is a link to a 39 minute video of the Grand Final Debate at Worlds in South Africa 2013. While the order of speakers and speaking times at Worlds are a bit different, this debate contains at least a dozen examples of attempts to use Points of Information—the largest number falling between minutes 15-21. You can also find this video with the following YouTube search: WIDPSC 2013 Grand Finals: Debate.

The top teams in the Advanced division will conduct a public exhibition debate after the three rounds have been completed. Last year’s winners of our two traveling trophies (Best School & Best Advanced Speaker), please be sure to bring these trophies with you to the competition or mail them to Stewart Thomsen in time for them to be awarded the day of this year’s debate. Many thanks!

Registration on the day of the debate will be held from 10:30 to 11:15 A.M. Teams arriving after the close of registration will not be allowed to compete. A single briefing for both judges and debaters will follow the registration in Rousmaniere Hall. Dinner for DANEIS coaches will be served in the Farnham Room after the 3rd round as part of their fall DANEIS coaches meeting. Dinner for everyone else will be served in the Refectory after the third round to avoid lost time while the scoring room tallies the results of Round III to determine the participants in the Exhibition Round. We will start the Exhibition Round as soon as possible. The scoring of the debate and the standings in each division will be announced immediately following the Exhibition Round. There is a $60 entry fee for each four-person team, and an additional $15 entry fee for each observer in order to offset food costs. Please make checks payable to “The Roxbury Latin School.”

Please fill out the enclosed entry form and e-mail it to us by Tuesday, September 15. We would greatly appreciate it if you could provide the names of your debaters by that date as well. Because our space is limited, we encourage schools to contact us ahead of this deadline as we may run out of space before September 15. If you have any questions, please e-mail Stewart Thomsen at stewart.thomsen@roxburylatin.org.
Sincerely,
Justin Jin – RL Debate President
Stewart Thomsen – RL Debate Advisor
