Loomis Chaffee – Sunday, January 21

Greetings Fellow Debaters,

Please find attached the invitation to Loomis Chaffee’s 42nd Annual Debate Tournament to be held on January 21, 2024 (switch-side, cross-ex, policy resolution with a one-hour preparation period using a supplied packet of information). Details about the day and the style of debate are included in the attached invitation. You should, therefore, read very carefully the invitation which outlines the format of this cross-ex debate tournament. I have also attached a sample ballot as well as some sample information packets from some previous Loomis Chaffee tournaments.

Briefly, our tournament will be, a cross-ex, switch side, policy debate, but where none of the participants will know the resolution prior to the day of the tournament. Shortly after the close of registration we will give out the resolution along with a research packet of approximately 10 pages to accompany that resolution. Debaters will have one hour to work together in teams (schools) in assigned spaces to prepare their cases using the packet (but no other research materials of any kind) before the rounds of debate begin. Thus, teams have access to exactly the same information, so the debates will be assessing how well you can work with that information to produce & defend cogent, persuasive arguments on both sides of the issue. After the one hour preparation period, the debate competition will begin with each team ultimately debating both sides of the resolution. The first two rounds will be assigned (one round on each side) – for the third round the side will be decided in the room by mutual agreement if the two teams, by chance, want different sides, or by coin flip if on that third round both teams had hoped to debate the same side.

We hope you share our enthusiasm for preserving this form of debate. We believe it includes some of the best features of prepared cross-ex tournaments while eliminating the sometimes challenging research burden that was difficult for some in mid-January. Full details on the day, as well as guidelines for judges, are included in the attached invitation. I have also attached a sample ballot (with instructions) and a couple of examples of research packets from some previous debates we’ve held using this format.

Teams may enter up to two 4-person teams in each division (Advanced & Novice) and must supply a judge for each 4-person team entered. We ask that you reserve your spots in the tournament by January 12 (earlier if possible) and that you supply the names of your debaters by January 15 (earlier if possible). Assuming space still remains on January 12 the non-league schools hoping to compete in the tournament will be accepted into the tournament and their spots guaranteed beginning January 13. The cost for entering is $80 per four-person team – no additional charge for observers. We hope to hear from many of you soon and look forward to welcoming you to our annual tournament on January 21st.

Choate – Sunday, January 7

The Choate Rosemary Hall Debate Team cordially invites you to the Choate Invitational Debate Tournament on January 7, 2024. In both the novice and advanced division, the event will feature three rounds of parliamentary extemporaneous debate with straight resolutions (full rules can be found here). Because we are a world qualifier, we will give priority to league members and keep a running list of additional schools who are interested. If we have enough space, these schools will be contacted and invited to attend the tournament.

Initial registration is limited to 3 four-person teams per school. Each school must register at least one team in both the novice and advanced divisions and provide one judge per four-person team. In the advanced division, we ask that you provide an adult judge. Choate will be unable to supply judges. We also will not have timers or Speakers, so debaters and judges will need to fulfill both of these roles.

To register, please RSVP to Katherine Chong ’25 at kchong25@choate.edu indicating how many teams (novice/advanced) you plan to bring, as well as providing the names of all debaters and judges. If you have additional questions, please reach out to Kyra Jenney at kjenney@choate.edu. The deadline for registration is December 15th.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the tournament!

Sincerely,

Kyra Jenney, Debate Advisor

BB&N – Sunday, December 3

Hello DANEIS Schools,

Buckingham Browne & Nichols School is excited to invite you all to Cambridge for a day of Parliamentary Debate and Impromptu Speaking.

The tournament will take place on Sunday, December 3, 2023. There will be two rounds of Parliamentary Debating (rules and procedures found here) and two rounds of Impromptu Speaking (rules and procedures found here).

The cost of the tournament is $100 per four-person team. Observers who wish to eat at the tournament will be $25 additional dollars per head. Each school is welcome to bring up to one advanced and one novice team of four students each. We have room for sixteen schools if each school brings eight students in this fashion. DANEIS member schools have first priority, with spaces being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration also depends on each school bringing a judge for each 4-person team they enter—we will not provide judges. Per DANEIS league rules, student judges will not be permitted to judge advanced debates. Parents of students debating in the advanced division should judge in the novice division. We ask that any students judging in the novice division be experienced debaters who have competed in DANEIS tournaments at the advanced level. Please be sure to brief your judges thoroughly before the tournament.

To register, please complete this form by Wednesday, November 15th. We will then be in touch with a second form asking for specific names for both your debaters and judges before the Thanksgiving Holiday.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Cambridge this December!

Sincerely,

Steele Sternberg and Talayah Hudson

St. Paul’s – Sunday, November 5

Dear colleagues,

The St. Paul’s School Debate Team cordially invites you to attend our Fourteenth Annual Invitational Debate Tournament in Honor of Secretary of State John F. Kerry, to be held on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

This tournament is a Worlds Qualifier. It is open to both advanced and novice teams, and you are welcome to enter no more than four teams total (two four-person teams in each division). You must also provide one judge for each four-person team. The fee for this tournament will be $80 per four-person team (including a judge) and $20 per observer.

The tournament will be Oregon-style Prepared with Cross-Ex and will consist of three rounds. Pairs will debate on the same side of the resolution for all three rounds. Each four-person team must have one pair debating affirmative and one pair debating negative. The resolution is:

BIRT municipalities in the United States should, as necessary, designate specific public lands for the settlement of the homeless.

Information on Oregon-style cross-examination debate can be found in the rules section of our league website at www.daneis.org. Although there will be an opening information session, we request that debaters and judges be thoroughly familiar with the rules and expectations of cross-ex debate before the tournament.

Please let us know by Monday, October 23rd how many advanced and novice teams you will bring by emailing this information to David Camden (dcamden@sps.edu). Once we hear from you, and closer to the tournament date, we will send you a request for the names of participating students.

If there are any changes in the number of teams, names of participants, or positions they are debating (affirmative or negative), please contact us as soon as possible prior to the tournament. If the changes are last minute, on the morning of the debate, it is imperative that you call (570-856-4489) so that the schematic can be adjusted in time for a smooth start. If a student drops out at the last minute, we will expect their partner to perform all speeches for that two-person team.

The tentative schedule for the debate is as follows:

10:00 – 11:00 am – Registration
10:00 – 11:00 am – Brunch
11:00 – 11:45 am – Debate Briefing
11:30 – 3:30 pm – Debate Rounds
3:30 – 4:30 pm – Dinner
4:00 – 4:30 pm – Tournament Awards

We hope to see many of you on November 5 and express our appreciation for your participation.

Sincerely,
Jacob Kwon, Cora Partridge, and Kelly Sung, Debate Captains
David Camden, Kevin Duncan, and Bob Gile, Coaches
