Dear Fellow DANEIS Coaches,

On behalf of the Phillips Academy Philomathean Society, we are writing to invite you to participate in the Andover Invitational Debate Tournament, to be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018. The tournament will consist of three rounds of Parliamentary debate (straight resolutions) for both novice and advanced divisions. Points of Information will be permitted and encouraged. Points of Order, Points of Personal Privilege, and heckling will not be permitted.

Awards will be given to the top three novice and advanced speakers, the top three novice and advanced two-person teams and the top three schools. The top speaker in the Advanced Division at this tournament qualifies to attend the World Debate Tournament next spring.

The day will begin with registration in the Chapel (on Chapel Avenue) from 9:00 a.m.– 10:00 a.m. Breakfast will be provided in Paresky Commons beginning at 9:00. Briefings for Debaters and Judges will begin promptly at 10:15 and the first round will begin at 11:00. After the conclusion of the third round of debate, at approximately 2:15, a full lunch will be provided for the debaters and judges in Paresky Commons. We anticipate that the brief awards ceremony will conclude by 3:30.

New resolutions will be provided for each of the three rounds. While no redefinition will be necessary, there will be a 2-minute definition-of-terms period during which all debaters must stay in the room with the judge and agree to terms before the 10-minute preparation time begins. During the 10-minute preparation period, the government should retire to the hallway to prepare separately. As with all DANEIS tournaments, it is strictly understood that teams may not consult any reference materials (electronic or otherwise) during their preparation time or during the actual debate. Teams that violate these rules will be disqualified from the tournament.

The format will be as follows:

Prime Minister – 5 minute constructive
Member of the Opposition – 8 minute speech
Minister of the Crown – 8 minute speech
Leader of the Opposition – 8 minute speech including rebuttal
Prime Minister – 3 minute rebuttal

Each school may register up to two four-person teams in each division, and must also provide one judge for each four-person team. In accordance with DANEIS league rules, student judges will not be permitted to judge advanced debates, and students judging in the novice division must be experienced debaters who have competed in DANEIS tournaments at the advanced level. Parents of students debating in the tournament should judge only in the division in which their student is not participating. In order to save tournament time, the briefing for debaters and judges will be limited to answering questions and explaining logistics. All schools are expected to have briefed their judges thoroughly on the rules, format, and the scoring techniques of parliamentary debating before arriving at the tournament. Judging materials and directions will be sent to confirmed schools the week before the event.

Please email Sarah Driscoll as soon as possible indicating the number of teams that you would like to register in each division. Fees for the debate are $75 for each four-person team and $15 per observer, and are payable at registration. Registration preference will be given to schools that host DANEIS tournaments. Once registrations from host schools are processed, available spots will be filled in order of request. This tournament fills every year. Please be considerate and only reserve spaces for teams that you are highly confident that you will be able to bring. Names of your debaters and judges are due no later than October 14th. Final registrations will be confirmed once these are received.

The St. Sebastian’s Debate Team cordially invites you to participate in our nineteenth annual Parliamentary Extemporaneous Debate Tournament on Sunday, October 7, 2018. The tournament will consist of three rounds of Parliamentary debate, in both novice and advanced divisions. We will be debating straight resolutions and using only points of information (no points of order, personal privilege or heckling). Each school may register one four-person novice team and one four-person advanced team (teams should include a judge as well; St. Sebastian’s will not provide judges). Schools should register by e-mail to: michael_nerbonne@stsebs.org. Please reply by Friday, September 28. Fees for the debate are $75 per team and $15 per observer. Checks should be made payable to St. Sebastian’s School. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at 617-462-3651. We also request that you call us at 617-462-3651 on the morning of the tournament, between the hours of 8:00 and 10:00, to report any changes in your final registration.

The maximum length and order of speeches are as follows:

A 30-second grace period will be allowed for each debater, after which the speech will be terminated. The Government will be given 2 minutes to define the terms in the room with the Opposition and the judge, followed by a 10-minute preparation time for both teams. The Government Team should repair to the hallway for the preparation period. Debaters are strictly forbidden from consulting any reference materials during the preparation period or during the debate. Violation of this rule will warrant disqualification from the Tournament.

Directions to St. Sebastian’s School are available on our website. Please note that registration, meals and all of the debates will take place in the Academic Building.

Please see the five PDFs under the heading “DANEIS Parliamentary Debate with POIs.” We ask that your debaters and judges be thoroughly familiar with all of this information prior to the tournament as we will have just a short time for the judges’ and debaters’ briefing on the day of the debate. Event Guidelines

Dear Colleagues and Members of DANEIS,

You are cordially invited to the Paul Bassett Invitational Public Speaking Tournament, held at Stoneleigh Burnham School on Sunday, September 30. Our tournament will include three speaking opportunities in this order:

    1. Interpretive Reading (mandatory)
    2. Impromptu Speaking (mandatory)
    3. After-Dinner or Persuasive Speaking (choose one per each competitor)

Speakers and their coaches should arrive between 10:30 and 11:15 a.m. Our brunch will be the one meal served during the day. Event guidelines are enclosed and should answer all other questions. This year, in an effort to reduce the number of speakers in each room, we are expanding the number of rooms from five to eight. We will need two judges in each room, so we will need sixteen judges. We are allowing up to six speakers from each school. If you are bringing one to four speakers, bring one judge; if you are bringing five or six speakers, bring two judges. To be eligible for team awards, you must register at least four speakers. Only the top four speakers from a school will be averaged for awards.

First, second, and third place will be awarded in each of the categories. Team trophies will also be awarded to first, second, and third place finishers. An overall tournament winner will be named. Please read your event guidelines carefully and remember that all After Dinner and Persuasive speeches must be original. Impromptu speeches must be just that — Impromptu!

Additionally, guidelines for time keeping and penalties were changed at our all coaches meeting last April. Please refer to the attached event guidelines sheets to see those updates. If we have erred in the changes, please let us know. Please respond by Tuesday, September 26, with your speakers’ names and if they are giving an After-Dinner or Persuasive speech. Dear Fellow Debaters,

The Roxbury Latin School Debate Society cordially invites you to participate in our Parliamentary Debate Tournament on Sunday, September 23, 2018. There will be both Novice and Advanced divisions. With all DANEIS parliamentary debates now using extemporaneous straight resolutions and allowing only Points of Information (no Points of Order, no Points of Personal Privilege, no heckling), we hope that you will be able to join us for this league opener. Linked above is a file that contains the complete package of DANEIS Parliamentary materials for prepping judges and debaters. It takes time to read through these materials, so please be sure to give new judges this material well in advance. As always, there will be new resolutions for each of the three rounds. Parents of students debating in the advanced division should judge ONLY in the NOVICE division.

All schools are expected to brief their judges thoroughly on the rules, format, and the scoring techniques of debating. The top teams in the Advanced division will conduct a public exhibition debate after the three rounds have been completed. Last year’s winners of our two traveling trophies (Best School & Best Advanced Speaker), please be sure to bring these trophies with you to the competition or mail them to Stewart Thomsen in time for them to be awarded the day of this year’s debate. Many thanks!

Registration on the day of the debate will be held from 10:30 to 11:15 A.M. Teams arriving after the close of registration will not be allowed to compete. A single briefing for both judges and debaters will follow the registration in Rousmaniere Hall. Dinner for DANEIS coaches will be served in the Farnham Room after the 3rd round as part of their fall DANEIS coaches meeting. Dinner for everyone else will be served in the Refectory after the third round to avoid lost time while the scoring room tallies the results of Round III to determine the participants in the Exhibition Round. We will start the Exhibition Round as soon as possible. The scoring of the debate and the standings in each division will be announced immediately following the Exhibition Round. There is a $60 entry fee for each four-person team, and an additional $15 entry fee for each observer in order to offset food costs. Please make checks payable to “The Roxbury Latin School.”

Please fill out the enclosed entry form and e-mail it to us by Tuesday, September 18. We would greatly appreciate it if you could provide the names of your debaters by that date as well. Because our space is limited, we encourage schools to contact us ahead of this deadline as we may run out of space before September 18. Dear DANEIS coaches,

On Sunday, April 29, Deerfield Academy is hosting the 4th Annual Robert H. Gile Tournament of Champions (TOC) in conjunction with its usual Deerfield Parliamentary Debate. To keep the overall event manageable, we are limiting schools to a maximum of three 4-person teams, only one of which may be registered for the TOC. Think of registration as having three silos: one for the Tournament of Champions (DANEIS member schools only), one for the Advanced Division of the Deerfield Parliamentary Debate, and one for the Novice Division of the Deerfield Parliamentary Debate. There will be one registration process for all teams to facilitate scheduling, scoring, school packets, and so forth.

Each DANEIS member school is invited to enter one 4-person team chosen by the sending school’s coach for the TOC portion of the event. Entering a team in the TOC is optional, but if you do, we ask that you assign your head coach (preferably), or a very experienced adult coach, as the judge for your one and only TOC team. We expect each school’s coach to serve as a judge for all three events. The TOC will consist of three different events. Round one will be Parliamentary Extemporaneous Debate, debating straight resolutions (unrelated to the prepared topic) and using only points of information (no points of order, personal privilege, or heckling). Round two will be Cross-Examination Prepared Debate. The Cross-Examination Prepared topic will be the following: Resolved, that President Trump’s proposed wall between the United States and Mexico should be constructed. Cross-Examination format will be 7 minutes constructive, 3 minutes cross, and 4 minutes rebuttal for each speaker. Please note that debaters should prepare both sides of this Cross-Examination resolution; a coin flip will decide sides on the day of the debate. Round three will consist of one round of Impromptu Speaking. Rules and ballots for all three events are attached.

You may register teams in the Advanced and Novice Divisions of the Deerfield Parliamentary Debate as well, remembering that the total number of 4-person teams per school is limited to three (which would include your TOC team if you were to opt to enter a team in the TOC). For the Deerfield Parliamentary Debate portion of the event, you may choose advanced and/or novice division as you see fit. Please remember that any student judge in the novice division must be an experienced advanced debater per DANEIS policy. Parliamentary rules and ballot for the Deerfield Parliamentary Debate are the same as the rules and ballot used for the parliamentary portion of the TOC.

Scoring for all three rounds of the TOC will be based on speaker points, with rank in room as the tiebreaker. There will be no records kept of win-loss in the debate rounds. Each of the three rounds will be out of 100 points for each competitor. Thus each competitor’s total score for all three rounds of the TOC will be out of 300 possible points overall. Scoring for the Advanced and Novice Divisions of the usual Deerfield Parliamentary Debate will be like any other DANEIS parliamentary debate.

We ask that you register by our deadline of Friday, April 20, so that the scheduler has a full week to create the three different schedules that will be needed for this joint event. Please be sure to indicate the silo in which each of your teams belongs when you register! You can email your registration to Shreyas Sinha at ssinha19@deerfield.edu There will be a fee of $70.00 per team (no additional fee for observers). Checks should be made payable to Deerfield Academy. We also request that you text us at 617-803-6482 on the morning of the tournament, between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00 am, to confirm your registration and inform us of any last minute changes. This pre-registration is required and essential, and will allow us to begin on time. It is imperative that you arrive by the end of the registration period. Finally, we ask that your debaters and judges be thoroughly familiar with all of the information contained in the attachments prior to the tournament, as we will have just a short time for the judges’ and debaters’ briefings on the day of the tournament.

Speakers and coaches should arrive between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. We will be providing brunch in the morning, and a light meal after the third round of events. Event guidelines are linked above and we hope will answer your other questions.

Each school is expected to bring at least one judge. You may register one or more speakers with a maximum of five speakers. If you wish to bring a fifth speaker, we ask that you provide a second judge, if possible. To be eligible for team awards, you must register at least four speakers. First, second, and third place awards will be given in each category. Team trophies will also be awarded to first-, second-, and third place schools. A “best speaker” will also be named. Please read event guidelines carefully. We would ask that all After-Dinner and Persuasive speeches have been created within this academic year. Impromptu speeches must actually be impromptu… please no canned speeches! Registration is $20.00 per competitor, or $75.00 for a five person team. We have a field limit of 64 speakers.

As a reminder: In a change for us this year and going forward: The style of the debate will be Parliamentary Extemporaneous.

There will be three rounds of Parliamentary debate. We will be debating straight resolutions and using only points of information (no points of order, personal privilege, or heckling). There will be novice and advanced divisions, and schools are invited to enter one team in each division. Each team consists of four people. The charge for each four-person team is $75, and $15 per observer. Please send a check made out to Belmont Hill School or bring one on the day of the debate. Each four-person team must also include a judge; we will not be able to supply judges. Please RSVP by Friday, March 30, by email to jtift@belmonthill.org, indicating the advanced and/or novice teams you plan to bring and the names of the debaters and judges (the names may also follow in a later email).

On the morning of the debate, please call 781-859-7256 if you have any changes; this practice will greatly facilitate the registration process.

Breakfast will be available for debaters, judges, coaches, and observers upon their arrival in the morning, and lunch will be available while the results are tabulated in the afternoon.

Public Speaking Ballots

Dear Members and Friends of DANEIS,

We cordially invite you to attend the 2018 Kingswood Oxford Public Speaking Tournament on Sunday, February 4 in West Hartford, Connecticut. Each school may register up to eight speakers. Every speaker must compete in two rounds of two events, meaning that each speaker will compete in two events in a total of four rounds:

I) After Dinner Speaking or Persuasive Speaking
II) Impromptu Speaking or Ethical Dilemmas

Our goals in departing from the traditional three single-round events followed by finals are the following: to encourage students to prepare one event really well, to offer more opportunity for learning over the course of the day, and to balance out any potential anomalies by determining awards based on two sets of scores. Guidelines for all of the events are attached. Also attached are copies of all the ballots we will be using along with sample ethical dilemmas. If you require further information about any of the events, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We ask that each school entering bring at least one adult judge for its first four entrants and one additional judge (who may be either an adult or a senior with public speaking experience) for any additional entrants. Student and adult judges will work together; neither will judge any speakers from their own schools.

Although there will not be separate advanced and novice divisions, we will award distinguished younger speakers competing in their first public speaking tournament. Awards will be given to the top three speakers in each individual category, the top three overall speakers, and the top three schools. In order to be eligible for a school award, a team must consist of at least four speakers.

Space is limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible to Heather Wayne. At that time, please let us know how many speakers you plan to bring, whether they will be entering After Dinner Speaking or Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu Speaking or Ethical Dilemmas. The deadline for entering is January 26. The registration fee of $18 per competitor (payable to Kingswood Oxford School) should be paid by check at the door. We look forward to seeing you on February 4.
