Guidelines for Judging Policy Debates – 100-point-scale
Cross-Ex Debate Ballot

Dear fellow debaters and coaches:

The Groton School Debating Society is excited to invite you to our 3rd annual Oregon Style Prepared Debate Tournament on Sunday, September 25, 2022. We are presently planning to have an in-person tournament but are prepared to switch to hosting virtually should the need arise. Please note the Groton School campus is only open to individuals who are fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. Decisions about additional safety procedures will be made closer to the date of the tournament (masks may be required in indoor spaces).

The tournament will consist of three rounds of cross-ex style debate in both the advanced and the novice divisions. Pairs will debate on the same side of the resolution for all three rounds. The resolution for the tournament will be:
Be it resolved that the United States federal government should develop a nation high-speed rail network.

Affirmative teams are strongly encouraged to propose a specific plan consistent with this resolution. For more detailed information on plans and expectations for an Oregon style debate, please review Curt Robison’s excellent discussion of generic debate responsibilities (which is attached to this message).

Schools may enter one 4-person team in each of the advanced and novice divisions (two 4-person teams in total) and must provide a judge for each team entered (Groton will not be able to provide judges). Experienced advanced debaters may judge in the novice division, but per DANEIS rules, advanced teams must be accompanied by an adult judge.

Fees and registration are noted in the above pdf. The deadline for registering for the tournament is Sunday, September 11th.

Scoring for this debate will be based on a 100-point scale. To see a sample ballot, please go to https://www.groton.org/debate/sample-ballot. All judges should be briefed on judging criteria in advance of the tournament. We ask that you please pay particular attention to the categories outlined at the end of the attached Guidelines for Judging Oregon Style Cross-Examination, Policy Debates.

We hope that you can join us and look forward to welcoming you to the Circle on September 25th.

Sincerely,
Michael Gnozzio and Irenae Aigbedion

KO Public Speaking Ballots

Dear Members and Friends of DANEIS,

We cordially invite you to attend the 2021 Kingswood Oxford Public Speaking Tournament on Sunday, February 7 on Zoom. Each school may register up to eight speakers. Every speaker must compete in two rounds of two events, meaning that each speaker will compete in two events in a total of four rounds:

I) After Dinner Speaking or Persuasive Speaking
II) Impromptu Speaking or Ethical Dilemmas

Guidelines and ballots for all of the events are attached. If you require further information about any of the events, please do not hesitate to contact us. We ask that each school entering bring at least one adult judge for its first four entrants and one additional judge (who may be either an adult or a senior with public speaking experience) for any additional entrants. Student and adult judges will work together; neither will judge any speakers from their own schools.

Although there will not be separate advanced and novice divisions, we will award distinguished younger speakers competing in their first public speaking tournament. Awards will be given to the top three speakers in each individual category, the top three overall speakers, and the top three schools. In order to be eligible for a school award, a team must consist of at least four speakers.

Please RSVP as soon as possible by completing the form linked here. At that time, please let us know how many speakers you plan to bring, whether they will be entering After Dinner Speaking or Persuasive Speaking; Impromptu Speaking or Ethical Dilemmas, the names of your speakers, and email addresses for all competitors and judges.

Prior to the day of the tournament, you will receive an email with the Zoom details for the rounds as well as the team and judge codes for all participants. By 9:00am EST on the morning of the tournament, please email Heather Wayne to confirm your team names or to notify us of any changes. All relevant ballots and other materials will be shared during the Judges’ meeting at the start of the tournament.

The deadline for entering is January 29. We look forward to seeing you on February 7!

Sincerely,
Michelle Caswell and Heather Wayne, Forensic Union Coaches

2020 Tournament Distributed Packet
2019 Tournament Distributed Packet
2018 Tournament Distributed Packet

Greetings Fellow Debaters,

Please find attached the invitation to Loomis Chaffee’s 39th Annual Debate Tournament to be held online on January 17, 2021 (switch-side, cross-ex, policy resolution with a one-hour preparation period using a supplied packet of information). Details about the day and the style of debate are included in the invitation. As you are well aware, the pandemic forces our debates to be online which requires some subtle changes. You should, therefore, read very carefully the invitation which outlines how this tournament will run. In addition to the invitation I have also attached samples of information packets from previous Loomis Chaffee tournaments so that those who are considering attending for the first time can see the sort of information that will be supplied on the day of the tournament when the resolution is announced in our opening general assembly.

Briefly, our tournament will be, a cross-ex, switch side, policy debate, but where none of the participants will know the resolution prior to the day of the tournament. Shortly after some general announcements in the main zoom room (general assembly begins at 10 AM) we will release the resolution along with a 10 to 12 page research packet (given to each debater) to accompany that resolution. Debaters will have one hour to work together in teams (schools) in separate breakout rooms to prepare their cases using the packet (but no other research materials of any kind) before the rounds of debate begin. Thus, teams have access to exactly the same information, so the debates will be assessing how well you can work with that information to produce & defend cogent, persuasive arguments on both sides of the issue. After the one hour preparation period, the debate competition will begin with each team ultimately debating both sides of the resolution. The first two rounds will be assigned (one round on each side) – for the third round the side will be decided in the room by mutual agreement if the two teams, by chance, want different sides, or by coin flip if on that third round both teams had hoped to debate the same side.

We hope you share our enthusiasm for preserving this form of debate. We believe it includes some of the best features of the long tradition of DANEIS prepared cross-ex tournaments while eliminating the sometimes challenging research burden that was difficult for some in mid-January. Full details on the day, as well as guidelines for judges, are included in the attached invitation. I have also attached a sample ballot (with instructions) and a couple of examples of research packets from the three most recent debates we’ve held using this format.

Teams may enter up to two 4-person teams in total (no more than one in each division – Advanced & Novice). Schools must supply a judge for each 4-person team entered. Experienced advanced student debaters may judge in the novice divison, the advanced division is judged by adults. Please read the invitation to see further guidance/preparation that we ask of each judge. Please let us know whether or not your school will be participating by Jan 12 at the latest (earlier if possible) and you should supply the names of your debaters and judges by January 14 (earlier if possible). We hope to hear from many of you soon and look forward to welcoming you to our annual tournament on January 17th.

Guidelines for Impromptu
Guidelines for Interpretive Reading

Dear DANEIS Debate Coaches,

The Buckingham Browne & Nichols School Speech and Debate Team invites you to our combined speech & debate tournament on Sunday, December 6th, 2020. This year’s tournament will be held on ZOOM of course!

Each school may register up to two four-person teams. Berths in the tournament will be given on a first-come, first served basis, with preference given to DANEIS member schools through our RSVP date of November 25th.

Each school needs to bring one judge for each four-person team entered. Per DANEIS league rules, student judges will not be permitted to judge advanced rounds. Parents of students competing in the advanced division should judge only novices. We also ask that any students judging in the novice division be experienced speakers/debaters who have competed in DANEIS tournaments at the advanced level. Please be sure to brief your judges thoroughly before the tournament.

There will be one round of debate, one round of interpretive reading, and one round of impromptu speaking (in that order). Additional guidelines for speech events are below.

Briefings for judges and debaters will begin at 10AM (we ask that everyone sign on by 9:30AM) and Round 1 will start at 10:30AM.

Please RSVP no later than November 25th via email to sgetchell@bbns.org with the number of teams you would like to enter. Early RSVPs are welcome; please send along the names of your debaters as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you online!

October 19, 2020

Fellow debaters and coaches:

The St. Paul’s School Debate Team cordially invites you to attend our Eleventh Annual Invitational Debate Tournament in Honor of Secretary of State John F. Kerry, to be held via Zoom on Sunday, November 15th, 2020.

The tournament is open to both advanced and novice teams, and you are welcome to enter no more than four teams total (two four-person teams in each division). You must also provide one judge for each four-person team. In accordance with DANEIS rules, only those who have participated in no more than six previous interscholastic tournaments, or those who have not debated in the last fifteen calendar months, may compete as novices. We request that coaches use their discretion. No fees will be collected for participation, and, unfortunately, we will not be able to provide trophies.

The tournament will be Oregon-style Prepared and will consist of three rounds. Pairs will debate on the same side of the resolution for all three rounds. The resolution is:

Resolved, that the United States should establish a NATO-like alliance in Asia.

Information on Oregon-Style cross-examination debate can be found in the rules section of our league website at www.daneis.org. Although there will be an opening information session, we request that debaters and judges be thoroughly familiar with the rules and expectations of cross-ex debate before the tournament.

Please let us know by October 30th how many advanced and novice teams you will bring by emailing this information to Andrew Gray (agray@sps.edu). Once we hear from you, and closer to the tournament date, we will send you a request for the names of participating students to enter into our scoring system.

If there are any changes in the number of teams, names of participants, or positions they are debating (affirmative or negative), please contact us as soon as possible prior to the tournament. If the changes are last minute, on the morning of the debate, it is imperative that you call (617-800-7903) so that the schedule of debates, and/or the appropriate information in our scoring database, can be adjusted in time for a smooth start. If a student drops out at the last minute, we will expect his or her partner to perform all speeches for that two-person team.

In the coming weeks we will reach out again with more information regarding Zoom details. We send this letter in order to share the resolution and to invite schools to register their teams.

We hope to see many of you on November 15th and express our appreciation for your participation.
Sincerely,

Isabel Maney, Caleb Lee, and Khuan-Yu Hall, Debate Captains

Andrew Gray, Dave Camden, and Bob Gile, Coaches
